Animal Rescue of Carroll has big goals for the future! But before we can get there, we need help
accomplishing the smaller things which will enable us to plan for the bigger things (shelter, more county-wide assistance). More
people-power is need to help achieve our goals of providing Carroll County with a safe haven for unwanted pets.
WAYS YOU CAN VOLUNTEER:
- Home Visits: ARC needs people both in-Carroll and out-of-the-Carroll
area to help complete home visits. A home visit consists of visiting potential adopters at their residence, reviewing
the adoption contract and completing a home visit questionnaire, while educating potential adopters on basic animal care.
ARC receives applications from all over Iowa and out-of-state. If you live outside of the Carroll area or outside of
Iowa and would like to volunteer for home visits, please contact us via email at animalrescueofcarroll@yahoo.com. (Email is usually the fastest option because we can check it throughout the day and respond.)
- Vet Reference/Landlord/Personal Reference Checks: Potential adopters
often list a vet reference, landlord, or personal reference. People are needed to contact vets listed, contact landlords
to make sure a pet is allowed, and/or contact persons listed for references. Total time would typically consist of less than
5 minutes per day.
- Adopt-a-Thons: ARC holds adopt-a-thons at local
businesses and the Farmer's Market in the Carroll area. Volunteers are needed to help arrange the sponsoring business,
arrange for adoptable animals to be featured, assist with transporting adoptable animals, and being present at the event
to represent ARC.
- Veterinary Care Visits: ARC uses local veterinary clinics and APE's spay/neuter
clinic for adoptable animals. Volunteers are need to transport adoptables to and from vet appointments (and to remain at
the vet appointment to receive any instructions on after-care for the pet). Most vet care visits are done locally
but some is done in surrounding counties such as Guthrie, Greene, Dallas, and Calhoun.
- Poster distribution: The more people that see the available animals,
the greater chance they have of being adopted. People are needed to distribute fliers anywhere and everywhere,
in Carroll and out. These can be hung in stores, gas stations, malls, and anywhere people allow fliers to be hung. If
you would like to be added to the list of people who receive the fliers via email, please send a note to: animalrescueofcarroll@yahoo.com.
- Owner's Releases: ARC receives many phone calls from persons wishing
to place their pet up for adoption. Volunteers are needed to go to these homes, complete owner-release paperwork, take
pictures of the pet, and explain our adoption program.
- Pre-Adoption Visits: Many people wish to meet a pet before deciding
if the wish to adopt or not. Volunteers are needed to pick up the pet being be requested and arrange a meeting time
with potential adopters. This can be set up by you and wherever you feel comfortable meeting people.
- Events: In June of 2008, ARC will host Paws On the Pavement,
a dog walk at Swan Lake State Park. There was an excellent response to the 2007 POTP and ARC is planning
for a bigger turn out this year. Volunteers are needed for the day of the event and before. Planning for the event includes
approaching businesses for donations, arranging activities during the day, printing fliers and signs, gathering supplies,
and much more. Other events occur through the year like Santa Paws pictures, the Great Iowa Pet Expo in Des Moines, Adopt-A-Thons,
etc.
Again, if you would like to contact ARC about any of the volunteer opportunities, please either send an email
to animalrescueofcarroll@yahoo.com or call 712-790-9116.
