Facts and Myths about fixing your friend:

  • We should have one litter first - actually medical studies are proving the opposite.  More and more evidence is showing that females spayed before their first heat cycle are typically healthier.  Many vets are now spaying and neutering as young as eight weeks.  For every home you find for an animal you bred, a home is lost of a shelter animal.
  • My pet is a purebred-  At least one in every four animals brought to a shelter is a purbred.  "Papers don't mean an animal should be bred.  Purebred or mixed...there are too many cats and dogs.  Let's find homes for the ones who need it...instead of making more that may end up homeless later. "
  • I don't want HIM to feel less of a MALE - Animals have no male/female concept.  It doesn't change a pet's basic personality.  They aren't going to suffer an emotional crisis.  At least 50% of overpopulation problem is unneutered males - it takes two.
  • It costs too much - then think about the cost of feeding a pregnant mother, then her pups, then the vet bills for first shots and worming, then feeding the ones you can't find home for right away, and so on.  A one time expense can save a lot of future expenses.
